It's a lasgun, the standard-issue rifle for Imperial Guardsmen. It's an energy-based weapon with the punch of a standard modern-day 5.56 assault rifle, but players who are familiar with warhammer 40,000 often refer to them as flashlights because they aren't as powerful as most other weapons.
