Artist's Comments

Though named after the Metallica song ([link]), I guess it really could be anything.

I suppose I was inspired mainly by the short story 'Into The Maelstrom' from the Warhammer 40,000 book 'Let The Galaxy Burn', which managed to top One in "worst fate ever", as the character is hooked up to a dreadnought sarcophagus and blinded, so he basically will live forever in a state of excruciating boredom.

But yeah, it's not exactly fanart for the song or the short story, and I just made it because it looked fucking cool.

Made with nothing but #2 Pencils, touched up a little bit in Photoshop. Took about four hours total. Or maybe five. Fuck, I don't know.

that perpetual boredom is what makes chaos dreadnought pilots go insane, turning the dreadnought into basically a raging bull. they have to be chained down, or have the sarcophagi removed from the dreadnought chassis while not in battle.

I've read "into the maelstrom" and I remember that ending. They're probably gonna keep his sarcophagus out of a dreadnought chassis, cause he could and probably would turn on them.
:iconbig0jack:
I dunno if you'd call that turning on them, though, since he was never on their side to begin with.

He'll probably just sit there and rot for a few millennia until the ship gets blown to pieces in some battle.

Which is still a fucking shitty way to die.

Hmm... I thought he was part of the chapter before it went traitor, and stayed with them to save his own skin, until he was captured by the white scars and forced to repent. He intended to lead the white scars to the traitor chapter to destroy them, but was caught trying to astropath their heading to the white scars fleet. When he tried to fight back, he was beat down and woke up inside the dreadnought sarcophagus. That's at least what I remember from the story.
:iconbig0jack:
Yeah, that's pretty much it.

this does actually fit the song fairly well. "One" was based off of Dalton's Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun, the story of a quadruple amputee with no face. it has always intrigued me. i have never read the book but i have seen the movie and was hoping there would be some cool fanart. and it looks like i found one =)
